| Erected
in honour of Emperor Diocletian around A.D 300. However
as impressive as this Pillar is, the actual site is
all that remains of a great Acropolis. (Serapeum). It
is said that it was reached by 100 steps and it was
heavily decorated in marble & precious metals. The site has recently undergone much conservation work carried out by the S.C.A. and now benefits from a encompasing pathway which allows the visitor to walk around the entire site with elevated viewing platforms. The catacombs and accompanying tombs have also undergone much conservation work again carried out by the skilled workers of the S.C.A. The Serapeum should be on everyones list of places to visit while staying in Alexandria. An insightfull site, rich in history and antiquity.
Some of its contents can be seen at the Greco-Roman
Museum. |
